domestic diva unleashed!

Day 5 • Sunday • 10 August 14 • Today’s High 41ºC

Perhaps spurred on by all the cleaning stuff we bought yesterday, I got up in the zone, ready to take on the flat! Plus the outdoor furniture was being delivered today and last I looked, there must have been about an inch of dust I needed to actually clean off the balcony first. The mind boggles at how much sand flies around here. Yes I get it, we’re in the desert but sometimes there just seems to be so much – like KL on a hazy day when you’re hardly able to make out the city skyline, except that it’s sand and it’s getting into your eyes.

Back to the flat. Now it’s not that I’m no good at housework. On the contrary, I’m rather particular about things being done right and everything looking perfect (you can blame the Virgo in me for that one!). I just prefer having someone else getting it perfect for me – who doesn’t right? Nevertheless, I put on a load of laundry, grabbed my mop & bucket and put my muscles to work. Jeez! I must have swept & mopped that blooming balcony 3 times before the water even started to look somewhat clear – it truly was unbelievable. And now I need a new mop!

Next I tackled the kitchen. If there’s one thing I hate more than a dirty house, it’s a dirty kitchen. I’m by no means a Domestic Goddess in the kitchen but I can hold my own. The key is trying to make it look effortless and having a kitchen in chaos kills that theory, especially when you’ve got an open plan kitchen. Now I don’t know what the previous tenants got up to but the kitchen was filthy. It’s like they had a foam party but with oil! Sure, it looked ok on the surface, but once you got into it, the cabinets were sticky, grease was dripping from the cooker hood and there seemed to be grease everywhere – even in the cabinets! Eewww it was disgusting! But there was no turning back now so I got down and dirty, put some elbow grease into it and I’m glad to say, the kitchen is now spick & span. Except for the cooker hood filters which are still soaking in water – I’m not holding out much hope that I’m ever gonna get them cleaned properly.

2 laundry loads later with a fully cleaned flat, I gave myself a pat on the back and collapsed on the air mattress – it was 10am. I really hafta stop waking up so early!
