once upon a time …

… the announcement of a Royal Engagement sparked mass heartbreak across the lands, as many a young lady had to sadly cross Prince Harry off their list. Not me of course – that ship not only sailed a long time ago but was hunted down, torpedoed and marooned forever more on Possum Island.

“Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale” – who would have thought that quote could mean an actual fairy tale complete with a real Prince Charming. Although, one could argue that a beautiful actress/humanitarian/campaigner might lead a life a little less ordinary than most of us mere mortals. That’s not to say that love doesn’t give the rest of us a chance at our own fairy tale, it’s just unlikely to end with any of us calling the Queen “Granny”.

But even without a Royal ending, when the stars align and you find yourself turning left instead of right, which in turn leads to an inexplicable chain of events that ultimately delivers you into the arms of your forever someone, doesn’t it still feel like you’ve found your very own Prince?

Granted, mine turned out to be the Prince of Sarcasm and it wasn’t so much serendipity that brought us together, rather his persistent stalking but hey, some fairy tales are just less conventional than others. But it was unexpected and we did have a soppy storybook kinda courtship – Best friend’s wedding • Maid of Honour • Best Man • Supposedly some visible electricity (the jury is still out on that one) • Him stalking – fast forward to – Me giving in • A holiday in Belfast staying at what was originally the palace built for the Bishops of Down (The Culloden) • A tearful proposal • 12 years later and forever more, King of my heart, sarcasm and all. Awww … yes, you can throw up now.

All I can say is, things can happen in the most wonderful ways when you least expect it. With a divorce behind me, I was about to pack up and move to Australia when Poss barged into my life. And now, we’re living in a sandbox, albeit a very nice sandbox, so far removed from where I ever saw myself but still just happy being together. So never give up hope on your fairy tale ending – like Prince Harry & Meghan Markle and little ole’ me, may you find your happily ever after.
